Congratulations! You will love it. We went in 2019 and it was fabulous! I can give lots of info, but Kyoto of course, and from there we thoroughly enjoyed our day trip by train down to Himeji Castle. I also loved Kanazawa and Takayama, because they're not so busy as Tokyo or Kyoto (which is crazy busy). We took a train from Tokyo to Kanazawa, then hired a car just for the day and drove from Kanazawa to Takayama via Ainokura (look them up on google maps). Our few hours in Ainokura were a real highlight. Then we took the train from Takayama to Kyoto, then several days later another train down to Hiroshima.
